Hey everyone I am going to use a 1 car garage as a recording studio my house is detached..but in quite a quiet area, which means i need to reduce sound leakage.. I had a look at this thread http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9166 but I didn't really understand what was going on. The garage is 16 X 8, has concrete walls and floor. Has a metal garage door and leads into the kitchen. This is depicted in the attachment. I will be using this room a a one room studio, so recording, composing and mixing will all take place in this studio. What is more important at this stage..as I would like to keep costs down to about 3 to 5 grand for treating the whole room, including flooring etc. What is more important? Sound proofing or sound absorption, obviously both are important to an extent, but will more sound absorption mean that less sound gets out?? The room is not huge but I think its an okay size, however building extra walls may make the room a lot smaller... Any idea on placement of speakers, desk and keyboards would be greatly appreciated also. I would be grateful if anyone would contribute, and those with more experience, please try and help me because I am serious about this project, and would like to take it in the right direction. Thank you

where's your design?
the problem with sound isolation is that you need more acoustic treatment because all that sound that could escape is now trapped... so to avoid getting angry neighbors and police involved, it sounds like the bulk of your work should be sound isolation - then treat as your budget allows. check out John's wall unit page to get some ideas on some very nice treatments you could adapt for your space.
thanks for the reply gullfo, i checked out the wall unit links...how much sound do they isolate from going outside.. i know that its impossible to make the room soundproof, i don't mind a quiet audible sound but not too loud to annoy everyone. im assuming that just filling gaps with silicone and layering walls with sheetrock won't be enough?? I also have to block of the inside of the garage door..i'm thinking of building a brick wall on the inside with maybe foam between the gap of the garage door and the wall? thanks for any help
the wall units are acoustic treatments not isolation. that said, depending on how things are already constructed and so on, it might be a useful exercise to test and see how much isolation you need. get a sound level meter ad set up some monitoring equipment you can then use sine sweeps and drums and bass to see whats getting out and from where. then you might find a good seal job could be all you need... or maybe you find that the location is almost completely unusable for this purpose...
