You a nice size space to work with. What is your budget? Are you doing the work yourself? How close will the mowers get to the building? Do want 5.1 capability now or to be ready for it in the control room? I strongly suggest at least the latter. Is the ceiling of the garage designed for the weight loads?
Have a look at ALL the studios in the Stdios Under Construction section of the site for ideas.
Congratulations on doings right. Too often I read about people who have started building without planing properly and having to tear down what they had done. For an excellent documented example of this read Lou's Studio Build. Yes, it is long, but knowing what he went through may save you tens of thousands of dollars.
Good studio building is 90% planning and 10% construction.
Constructively,

My bad. I thought you wrote that neighbors are 300' away but cut their grass.
Working with a $20k budget on an 800ft^2 space is $25/ft^2. I do not know if this is feasible. It comes back one of my initial questions. Are you doing the labour yourself?
Please answer questions asked and keep the questions coming. The more you know, the better you studio will be.

Thanks for the quick reply. Have you had a chance to study the studios in the link I gave? Blue Bear Studio was built in a basement. Similar to what you what you describing in that the outer shell was already there. The cost was $62k over five years ago. We are not writing about building a boat anchor. The value if you are thinking about resale value is meaningless. If you get buyer who is a musician then you will get it, If not, you have to judge the value to you for the time you are there. Answer ALL the questions and keep the questions coming! AndreLet me restate- the 20 or 30 grand is after the shell is built. that means the concrete , framing, roofing, windows, siding, exterior paint, etc... will already be built and in place before the 20 or 30 grand budget - and I can up the budget also. the shell will run around 20k so the TOTAL would be 40k to 50k

Uuhm, I don't know how to answer you. I gave several questions at the beginning of this thread trying to help you, which you have ignored. The Blue Bear thread includes the complete drawings. When you ask which part was the most expensive, the the easy answer is the labour. One of my first questions to you was if you are going to do the labour yourself. Feeling circular? I am. Andrethat's a nice place. 62K?? do you know what the expensive parts were??

I'm being diplomatic trying to save face. Yes you answered questions. I did not read your answers properly.
Working on space, how many people do you want to have in the control room at once? Do you want a drum/vocal isolation booth?
My first thought are all in one iso booth from where the stairs come up, with doors to the washroom, control room, and studio. Size dependent on what is wanted for control room and studio.
One of the great things you have in your advantage is the ceiling height. The control room is the only space where working on symmetry is important.
One of the best investments you can make is to buy Rod Gervais's book Home Recording Studio: Build it Like the Pros. In addition to being an excellent text, Rod is a regular here.
Keep asking!

Good save Andre. You deserve better treatment in my opinion. Another book for your growing library Mr. slobbermonster, "How to win friends and influence people".Sometimes it's just cheaper for the other guy to do the work while I do thing that make money
A lot of good beginner tips to be located in this link:
http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7572
It is a required read. It benefits the reader much. Which in turn helps everyone else during and after the build is successful.
It can take weeks, sometimes months to put together a good build design.
The details, lord the details.
Good luck.
mr monster - if you have a no limit budget, would it not be an idea to employ a professional studio designer? Someone to sit down with and talk through your ideas? Just my opinion. You do seem a little off with Avare, who is only trying to help you. Thanks.Budget is whatever it takes, there really is not a set limit since it's part of the total house remodel
or something like this:

Just dont get sensitive about certain replies...everyone here is trying to help.
Look forward to seeing what you achieve, and good luck
actually the bath room and storage is in an ok spot. adding the wall with slider on that wall gives you an air lock, and then the rest is a simple room within a room ;-) sketchup is the program.By the way the bathroom doesn't have to stay where it is, I just put it there for no real reason other than the wall with the door was there.
I downloaded the free version....still trying to get my head around it....but its a great start.actually the bath room and storage is in an ok spot. adding the wall with slider on that wall gives you an air lock, and then the rest is a simple room within a room ;-) sketchup is the program.By the way the bathroom doesn't have to stay where it is, I just put it there for no real reason other than the wall with the door was there.
