I would love to use 2 sliding glass doors between my control room, and tracking room, like I see on some of the plans around this forum. Where does one buy these with thick enough glass to be effective? Thanks. :)
I used old-recycled (from a salvage yard) sliding glass doors and mine work real well. When a drummer whacks the hell out of the drums, I can hold a VERY normal conversation only 8 feet away. My rooms are a bit on the small side: live room - 10x12, and my control room is: 10x11 The only reason I can hear anything really at all is because the stripping where the fixed door and the slider meet (when closed) is worn and there's a noticeable gap of about 1/32 or 1/16. But remember, there is the door (which is double insulated), and 3.5 inch air gap and then another door. I couldn't be more happy - given the size of my rooms. To be able to talk softly in the control room while a drummer plays (in such close proximity) is more than I expected. Plus, I can hear what the mic hears - and not any of the noise. I tried to buy new ones from Lowes - the standard, no frills white sliding doors for $300 each - BUT, there was no way to get them into my basement using the inside doorway, or the billco-doors. One method suggested on this forum was to actually cut the frame (across horizontally - half way up on each side). Then I could have brought them downstairs and installed it into the framing. This would have worked 100% perfect, but the post came too late and I was too far into it with my old doors. So, in closing, the regular no-frills sliding patio doors from Lowes ($300) will work fantastic because the stripping is really good. Even old junky ones like mine are doing the job better than I thought they would. Thanks for the info. As far as the lowes/home depot sliding glass doors.(Not regular doors with windows in them, and not doors that company's such as overly sell) Can I get anyone else to comment on how much sound you think they'll stop? My studio is framed out for dbl wall construction, with a 3 1/2" air gap.I was planning on 2 layers of 5/8" drywall, possible with Green Glue in between. Not sure what that STC will be (Roughly),but it seems I would need some thick glass. Thicker than the Sliding Glass doors that Lowes, etc sell? In rod's book,he recommends windows being 3/4"thick on one wall ,and 1/2" thick on the other. So,if in fact I need beefier glass, where does one find these sliding glass doors? Again,I've seen plans on this site from the super pros with these sliding glass doors ,between control room ,and live room.Where does one buy these? Thanks for all the help guys! :)
Hey. I'm looking for the same info on sliding glass doors. I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone. I need a door and a window between my control room and tracking room. Hope the sliding glass door is a good idea. Hope to pull it off without custom door expense. Any ideas yet? P.S. I'm also in LA. Kevin quote="GMo"]Thanks for the info.
