Hello, I am a long time reader but this is my first post on the forums. I am in the process of re-designing the commercial space i have into a recording studio. Basically, my idea is to build a control room, vocal booth, drum room and a live room at different stages (when time and money comes to me), but all from one design. I already have a control/production room setup in there, but it was built on the cheap side and i have no problem pulling it down and reusing the materials. The unit i have has single brick outer walls, which run 3.5m high, followed by steel A frames that at their highest are 2.5m above the bricks. the roof is corrugated iron. At this stage i can only use half of the unit as i require the other space. the dimensions of the useable space is 15m by 7m, with another 15m by 9m avaliable if i require it later on. The main use for this studio would be recording bands and mixing. It is in an industrial area (nobody around for miles after 5) and it backs onto highway, which can get a little loud sometimes. I have 3 Phase power, and the flooring is 2 large concrete pads. I'm not sure how deep the pads are but i would assume at minimum 20cm. Ive drawn a quick sketchup pic and have included the file. I already have a few idea's i've been working out for a while, but i would appreciate some new ideas and further input. Thanks Ps. one last question, the only reasonably priced rockwool i can find in aus is bradford soundscreen, it's 30kg/m3. I assume this is suitable enough to use in walls but is it dense enough for absorbers/traps?

I have added a new sketchup floorplan of the space i am willing and have deep enough pockets to use. 15m x 7.5m Do you think that is a large enough space to have a nice size live room, drum booth and control room? im sure i can go out on the 7.5m for a small vocal booth later on. my budget for now is a rough $15K AUS for construction minus hvac (but if i could include air con in that price it would be great) Thanks all

any plans for bathroom, lounge, etc?

Thanks a lot for the design gulfo. I was thinking the same sort of thing. Would it be better if the iso rooms and the main live area didn't have the 2 parallel walls? or is that something slat traps/fake walls can fix more effectively? There is already a room in the other section of the workshop with 2 bathrooms, and after the build if needed, a lounge area could be easily constructed in the remaining area, taking up little space. if i was to add a small vocal booth to the design, where would be the best place to put it? Thanks again for you efforts.
for the parallel walls, you build out slats (or your preferred treatments) on angles to break down the corner angles and remove the parallel surfaces. you can use a similar tactic on the ceilings. otherwise, if you build angled walls, and find you need bass trapping etc. you'll have to add them anyways, so in larger rooms, building boundary walls as parallel is usually simpler and leaves room for treatments.
heh - fellow New South Welshman here....how goes? Just wondering how you dealt with the corrugated iron roof? I have the same set up (though half the size of yours). I've run a building blanket under the iron roofing, and the ceiling is 2 layers of gyprock, with insulation (fairly standard ceiling batts & fairly mall roof space- 1.2 metres at centre pitch). But I'm still having rain noise etc get into the rooms (what a surprise you say!). How did you deal with this prob? Cheers Rob
Greetings from another NSW'er. :) Just reading your first post there, I can say that I used Soundscreen for my space and it worked really well and is about as cheap as you'll find. But, $15,000... unless you're doing all of the work yourself, can organise a trade price for your materials and do your own electrics, etc. .... you'll be pushing your luck to get that over the line. My space is half the size of yours and without gear, I probably hit around double that amount. Not trying to piss on your parade or anything here, just a heads-up is all. :) FYI, this is my studio diary so you can see what went into it and where all that money went: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9437 EDIT: Ah, I see this was a bump from the last poster and the original thread was from February. Hopefully the OP isn't long gone by now!
