Room design

Post by Charles Huguley »

Hi, all,

Since my projects involve mainly electronic instrumnets, I'm hoping to get by with just a mixing room. The entrance is via a hallway which, with moveable absorbers, may suffice as a tiny vocal booth.

I've posted a design and welcome comments. The room must do double duty as an office, so I've got to include an office desk as well as a mixing desk.

Also would appreciate advice about dimensions of hanging absorbers in speaker soffit.

Thanks,

Charles

Looks good to go to me.
Only thing I can see that one might remark on would be the kinds of surfaces on the office desk. You might want to think about getting some sort of thick cloth cover for it while mixing.

Thanks for the reply, Ron.

Yeah, unfortunately (I presume) the desk is metal. A cover, or what about some gobos on rollers? might help.

I forgot to mention that I plan to build the resonators on rollers, so that I can get into and out of the room.

Hi Charles - I suspect what you are asking for is the best of both worlds, an office - and a recording den :)

You've got a good sized room - work out your desk/recording gear relationship and how you'd lay it out and then relate it to the speakers and how you'd listen to it. It will be compromises.

Thanks, John.

Let's assume the room was devoted solely to mixing- no office furniture. In that case do you think my soffit dimensions, combination of bass traps and resonators and absorber would be a satisfactory solution?

The walls are cement block, the floor is polished cement, and the ceiling is steel beams supporting a cement floor above. I plan to place rockwool between th I-beams. Do you think it would it be best to extend this absorption the full length of the room, or not?

Thanks for your help.

that will work charles except I'd flip the room so the entrance door is at the rear of the room. Yes I'd treat the whole ceiling as you suggested.
