There are numerous of those speakers, you'll have to listen to 'm yourself.
Some are powered, others are passive, need an amplifier.
You can always hang 'm to a computer, be it directly or using an amp. Actives are just yielding build in amps and often EQ-possibilities.
You can use stands allright, but I consider a soffited speaker as better than a free standing one. But this depends on the speaker, vent position etc.
Not everybody agrees. Soffited speakers don't suffer from diffraction, have stronger mid lows and better imaging, IMHO.

This is a 3.25" low-frequency driver, I prefer to have a 6.5. You can get better monitors second hand, check Ebay. Invest as much as you can on monitors.
