free standing soffit mount?

Hi John and all,
My control room is in the basement of a rental house, and the landlord is not allowing any structural changes such as splayed walls or soffit mounted monitors. I have access to several 4'x8' plywood panels that have been mounted on frames so they stand a little over 8' tall. Would it be worthwile to cut holes in the panels to mount the monitors and build an airtight and acoustically treated box to enclose the back hopefully stopping the sound eminating from the back?

Yes that's worth a try Jason - check ot Thomas's soffit mounting system in the speakers forum:)

Yeah, this is a great idea. I've suggested it to others in similar situations. The main thing you want to avoid is creating a big resonator panel. With that much surface area a little vibration can create a lot of sound. Your panels should be rigid and well damped. You might also consider a variation of my decoupled mounting design. http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=718 You could mount the speaker to the wall (perhaps with something similar to this speaker mount) and "float" it though the panel opening. This way you avoid altogether vibrations being directly transmitted to that large surface.

Thanks for the replies guys. BTW, how big do you think the box should be? I'll be mounting event 20/20's for now. Got any specific ideas on how to best dampen the inside? I totally agree with the physical isolation of the monitor from the front panel. I'm not sure how to do it though. These boxes would be completely free-floating (no holes in the walls for speaker mounts) and maybe on wheels for positioning and de-coupling from the floor.
