Layout confusion

Post by ali_abbas »

I'm making a mixing area in my bedroom. I don't want to completely deaden the sound but rather achieve a balanced representation at my mixing position. The room is 15x17 feet in size with a smaller wardrobe area to the left of the door which measures about 4x6 feet. the wall where my mixing desk is placed is about 10 ft in length. I would've prefered to keep the desk along the opposite wall but the long window prohibits placement of wall hanging acoustic treatments.

My planned approach is to make 6 standing panels (shown in green) which would be 2'x6' and 4 inches thick. these would have one layer of 2 inch thick rigid fiberglass with a density of 105 kg/cubic meter(6-6.5 pcf i think). On top of this would be a layer of 3 inch orthopedic foam (egg crate shaped foam). the back side of the panel will be covered with burlap. I couldn't find any other rigid fiberglass product in my area.
I will also make 4 wall hanging panels which will have the same design as the standing panels.these are shown in blue.the foam side of all panels would be facing the mixing position.

From what i see, the the rigid rockwool board would absorb lower frequencies and the foam would absorb and diffuse higher frequencies which should give me an even response.

The thing thats confusing me is that on one side the standing panels have a wall behind them (right side of the mixing desk) and on the other side the standing panels have a gap of about 5 feet (left side of the mixing desk). I'm getting a hunch that this would mess up the stereo image. is that true?

regards,
ali

Ali,

stereo image shouldn't be a huge issue.

Although you are correct - the stereo image is really created in the mid and high frequency range - and the response from the right side will be close enough to the left that it shouldn't be be a real big issue.

If you find you need to - you can always install a single panel of MDF the same distance behind the left panel as your wall is from the right.

LF tends to fill the space - so it won't be an issue there.

HOWEVER - assuming that your drawing reflects reality in any way (meaning it is to scale) you really have the front treatments too far apart -they should be in your mirror view - and they aren't..........

rod,

thanx for the input man

the drawing isnt exactly 100% to scale but is almost correct and shows almost exact representation. i guess the error margin would be around 5%.

Ur right i overlooked the placement of the front wall panels and they should be in mirror position. With those over there i should get a good clear stereo image.

Are my panel construction plans correct?
2'x4'x4" frames housing 6pcf 2" rockwool sheet and having a 3" foam (orthopedic eggcrate shaped surface) layer on top. the foam faces the mixing position.
would it make any difference if i use wedge shaped foam?

also, all corners are untreated. Except for the bookshelf in the back corner which would act as a bass trap. its full with different sized books and is around 12" in width. would adding bass traps in corners affect the balance in my listening position or would it just even out the sound in the room. i just need an even output in the mix position.

thanx again

regards,
ali

Please read this at least ONCE - you posted too large graphics and didn't edit your profile for a LOCATION, among other things. Each of these points saves us time, and I have none left to save. Thanks... Steve
