Glass in small control rooms

Post by mysterytrain »

I've been wondering how far away should the glass be from the listening/mixing postion in small control rooms. For example, I am about to begin contruction of a home studio that will have two rooms in a 14' x 22' space. The most logical way to divide the space is to split the room along the long wall so that the control room would be approx, 11' wide and 14' long as would the live room. I would be looking over my shoulder into the other room to see the performers. So my question is that glass going to create reflections problems in a modest size control room. Seems to me I would want the glass behind the listening position. I've thought about turning the control room so that I would be facing the live room but of course that shortens the length of the room by 2 feet or so. Any thoughts on this..I know I'm trying to cram 10lbs of crap into a 5 lb bag..but! Peace, Ron

Ron - you've obviously haven't read anything at the SAE site
http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html
or been to the studios under construction site
http://johnlsayers.com/Studio/index.htm
where you'll see that we do it all the time for specific reasons.

Ron,

I'm sure John can come up with something a little more sophisticated, but here are first my thought of a basic layout.

I'm sure I could Thomas :) - but Ron has to read a bit before he asks questions like "Seems to me I would want the glass behind the listening position."........so I'm encouraging him to do just that by giving the links. ;)

Thanks for getting back to me. Actually, John came up with a detailed plan for me about 3 months ago. I've read everything on the SAE site and everything posted here. I also visit the studio construction site and find the pictures and plans helpful. Maybe my question was a bit unclear. I'm wondering what effects a window will have on mixing when it is positioned five feet or so from my left ear? My other question concerns wall penetration. A 14 ' wall of double wall construction with a pair of 6' sliders in place is what I'm planing on doing. Will I get better isolation with a 3' solid door and a fixed window?

Thanks, Ron

Probably yes but you won't have the ease of access and added communication sliders give.

It was your comment - "Seems to me I would want the glass behind the listening position." that made me think you hadn't read anything.
Why not post the plan so we can see what you mean - I don't have any plans in my files listed for mysterytrain.
