Opinions on my monitor short list:

Post by lomky »

In order of present preference:

Dynaudio BM5a
Tannoy Reveal 5a
KRK V6
KRK V8

My current setup is TannoyProto J's w/ Hafler TA1600. The TA1600 has developed the common problem of a bad side. I have read and searched that others have the same problem w/ this amp.

I've searched/read through peoples thoughts on the preceding monitors. So now I am looking for anyones specific experiences. This list is also based on availability in Edmonton, Alberta. They are all in about the same price bracket (except the V6's are a little cheaper than the rest)

My room is as yet untreated, so I am going to concentrate on that before I bring anything home. Currently we are renting and I am using a 17'x10' with 8 foot ceilings. We plan on buying a house in the next year with an unfinished basement, and with my construction/contracting experience I'm going to design and build a new space. But as my amp is crapped out I need something in the mean time. I want something that will grow with me, as I am tired of the buy cheap buy twice. But $1200 CDN is my budget.

The studio that I track in uses KRK V8's and Tannoy 800's. I like to listen to the Tannoys, but I trust the V8's more. I find they are a nice compliment to each other though.

I plan on doing some critical listening in the stores this weekend, but unfortunately I will be bouncing between a few different dealers.

But budget for a sub.
Even the BM6a's lack bottom end.

I'd look at the Adam A7's too.
