Earth v concrete

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Earth v concrete

Post by midgeybin »

I have just built the outer shells of my room in room construction ,dense block on a 9 inch found.Im thinking of building the inner stud walls off the existing timber floor. Is it worth the expense and time to dig that floor out and build my new inside rooms on a concrete slab. With the timber floor option will the sound travelling through the floor will be isolated by the block wall found?Or do I need concrete? Is earth a good medium for blocking downwards flanking transmission?I have 40 cubic metres ordered for Monday.Should I save that money,£3500 plus labour costs, for better acoustic treatment?

How much soundproofing do you need? What kind of music do you make in there?
It makes no sense to do the tough job if you're going to record violins and flutes in the middle of nowhere. Neighbours? Wife? :D

As you describe it it is no real room-in-room if you leave the old floor cause it is not decoupled. But anyway, maybe it's not necessary in your case???

got any diagrams or pictures of what you described in your first post?

You'll probably want to read the "before you post thread" and update your profile to reflect your region too.

Plan

Post by midgeybin »

Here is the plan for my construction. The rooms will be used for rock bands. Will the subsoil and 9 inch block founds prevent flanking? The gap between rooms is 12 inches from the outside face of each block wall. I was thinking that the kick drum bass etc would have to travel through solid compacted earth then through 12 inch wide concrete founds x2 and back up through the subsoil again to get to the adjoining room.Is a concrete base needed and what would be the improvement in Db's.

My browser window is maximized on my
1800x1440 21" monitor, and I'm still
scrolling sideways!

Please reduce the dimensions of your
1754 x 1240 pixel image so that it is no
more than 700 pixels wide. 8)

I'm beginning to think rock and roll has taken its toll on hearing; two different people have asked you to do things, to no avail; if you had readTHIS
as requested, you would have seen the request for small enough graphics so side scrolling isn't caused in the ENTIRE THREAD - you would have also edited your profile so we don't have to trace back to see if ANY of your posts give your location.

I'm not really trying to be a hard-ass here, but the time I've spent straightening up things that are covered in the above link could have been spent answering two OTHER people's questions. Please comply with the basic requests, and THEN we can answer specific questions - thanks... Steve
