How are these room ratios

Post by JeffD »

Long time lurker here asking my first question. I have a basement studio adjacent to a family room that I sometimes track in. The studio is 8'7 x 11'2 x 14'9 (1:1.3:1.7), 1413 cu.ft. The family room is 8'7 x 15'6 x 22'7 (1:1.8:2.6), 3007 cu.ft. The ceiling height (8'7) is measured to the subfloor above the suspended ceiling. No other materials between the two. So are these decent ratios? I've checked Everest's book, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the info.

Not bad. Use this for a good analysis of room modes

It is still a work in progress and you can follow some of the evoltion/theory here.

Jeff,

The first room may have a good ratio, but it's very small. When all else is equal, a large room with poorer mode distribution may be a better choice than one having a perfect ratio but is too small.

Thanks, AVare, for the link. That chart made at least some sense to me and confirmed what I have been hearing and seeing in playing back some tracks with a spectrum analyzer. In the larger room, all the problem frequencies seem to start at around 66 hz and down. The smaller room starts running into trouble around 100 hz. For acoustic guitar tracks, I've been having to low cut quite a bit.
