Owens Corning 703, 705 VS John Mansville 800 series suggest?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Owens Corning 703, 705 VS John Mansville 800 series suggest?

Post by davidki »

I am researching perhaps building my own acoustic panels for our new studio, I see alot of people using rock wool and corning 700 series fiberglass board, I see John Mansville name every onece in a while but I'd like to ask you folk your thoughts on John Mansville 800 series. From reading their specs on their "Spun-glas board" and taking to SPI in Nashville today he was suggesting the JM product (at the Nashville office, they do not carry the Owens Corning 700 series. The sell standard 2'x4' 1" 6lb density board by the bundle, 12 sheets about $77.00 or about $6.48 per board. I have put a call in to their Acoustics division in Kentucky but have not heard back yet so I will try to call them back tomorrow.

My question is, if the JM product is available locally here in Nashville at a reasonible price ($6.48 ea) isn't bad, is it an acceptable replacement from the OC 700 series? Any one use the JM for Acoustic Panels?

Perhaps John or Nightfly could chime in on this one? I am not sure if I will need 1" or 2" board yet, I assume the JM 2" stuff will be as reasonable priced. My last studio we used 703 with gilford cloth and a wall track system.. it was only 1" OC 703. Perhaps also, is there other acoustic cloth to look at similar or in place of gilford? I was quoted $12.00 per yard in 66" width today also.

Any Suggestions?

Dave,

The Absorption Coefficients for JM products are listed on this page, I am not sure if the one you are looking into is there or not. Check it out:

Thanks, I have also looked at the specs from the MFG

Thanks for the note, I have looked at the specs from both companies, they are close, but not exactly the same, I was wondering if anyone had used both products and liked one over the other. The pricing of the JM was less from what I recall than the OC, but OC does have the name I guess.

Hopefully someone chimes in that has had used both products to let us know if there is a real world difference of the two materials.

Thanks for your reply and the link, I will check it out..

Shaz, sorry, I didn't notice it was you that replied. I think you used 703, (and by the way I did talk to the folks where you bought your gilford, that is where I got the price also.). you are right, the cost to build is realy a savings, so I will want to see what how many panels I will need and then, how quickly I will need them. I am going to continue to search the area for 703 prices as well. I have quite a bit of time before I have to buy or build so, if I can get the product to build them, I just may take the time to do so, but again, it will depend on my available time.. Thanks for all your info also, it really helped.

Dave, if the JM stuff is available in your area go for it; you'll NEVER hear the diff, other than that sound of more money jingling in your pocket... Steve

In looking at the specs it looked so close, and I think the savings is deffenitly less cost for the sheets. Thanks so much for the reply..
