Rockwool in Los Angeles?
Okay, two questions:
1. Where can I find rockwool insulation in Los Angeles? I realize it's quite a big city and I ought to be able to find anything here. Nonetheless, everyone I've talked to has never even heard of the stuff. I went to three separate contractor supply stores yesterday and the only thing they carried was fiberglass. Not to mention all the HDs and Lowes I've been to.
2. ASumming worst case I cannot find it, how much of an STC hit will I take if I substitute fiberglass insulation? I don't have a drawing program on this computer, so I will do my best to diagram my walls with ASCII below:
| Stucco | insulation/studs | RC | 1/2 | 5/8 |
Thanks!

Haven't a clue......but after more than 6 months of blank stares and "you don't want that" comments, I finally found rigid fiberglass insulation at a local shop barely 1 mile from my studio. And unless you know something the rest of us don't, you would probably be well served by this rigid fiberglass board.
The really frustrating part of all this is that one of you helpful types had already suggested this local shop, but the salesman I talked to a few months ago must have started ealier that day as he had no idea what I was talking about and tried to talk me into a comletely inappropriate product. But this time I received great customer service and the company has realized that they have a potential gold mine on their hands. (sole seller of rigid insulation in Burbank, home of more studios than most mid-sized countries.) So they are now actively going after studio sales.
Oh yeah, the place is Viking Insulation, two blocks from Bob HOpe airport.
(Geoff, if you want detailed info on where they are located, what they charge, what they have in stock, etc. send me a PM)

Hey Steve!
Well, it's never-ending all right The stage has been functional since December, but in various forms ie: while mixing I was rolling around on a piece of plywood until the Brazilian Cherry floor (ooohhh) went in last week, with bamboo in the control room.
Working so much is great, but it doesn't leave much time for building, as you know. The glass went into the control room window a couple months ago, just in time for the 1st ADR session, replacing the Select Sound panels that had formerly plugged the window frame, you get the picture
It's now down to finish stuff, and increasing the isolation in the attic space, blah blah.
The best feature, as far as I'm concerned, is still the panel absorbers/wainscoting that you walked me through...they get a "wow" every time !
Thanks again!

Joe, I gave them a call and asked if they sold rockwool insulation. They said no! How long ago did you buy from them?JoeMilner wrote:Hey there,
don't have it on-hand, but just dial 411 for "Contractor's Building Materials" in Los Angeles. Exposition Blvd. is about a mile south of the 10 fwy
They're nice guys, I bought all the steel studs for our ADR stage there as well
Good luck!
No matter, I did find two other places. One in Ontario (RSA) and one in Sun Valley (Calwell). I'll probably be heading up to Calwell this weekend to pick up the insulation.

Hi
Ask for "Therma-Fiber", or "mineral wool", and unless they've discontinued carrying it, they have it. I seem to remember, though, when I called in 2003 and asked for "rockwool" that they didn't know what I was talking about then, either
Also, there's a place in Pomona (I think) called Insulation Wholesalers that's very good, with great prices.
Also, Cal-Wall out in the Valley.
Good luck!
Wait, I just read your post again, looks like you found Cal-Wall
