Add mass between floor joist a waste of effort?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Add mass between floor joist a waste of effort?

Post by Le Roux »

Hi

Been looking to build a studio for close to 10 years now.
Every time I get ready, I do more research and become overwhelmed by the information.

I have an L shaped room in my basement that has plumbing and main furnace ducts.

The plan was to make a one room does all.
In the end of the L shape I wanted to make a mixing room, and a tracking room/jam room in the larger part of the room.

My issue is the furnace ducts.
I want to sound proof the room best I can not to have noise from upstairs come down, or noise polluting the upstairs.
Neighbors isn't an issue.

Planned on doing the Pliteq Genie Clips with double 5/8" drywall and green glue. My furnace ducts are only 7', so this doesn't give me much to work with. But I can make the double drywall and clips fit.

I was going to add double drywall and green glue between the floor joist.
Is that a waste of my time because the weakest link is the furnace ducts which will only have 2x 5/8" sheets of drywall for isolation?
And a couple cold air returns a thin sheet of tin away from the upstairs.

Thanks
Neil

Hi Neil,

A few things:

- Without a detailed drawing (even a 2D), we can't comment on whether or not your proposed space is an ideal candidate for a recording studio.

- Without room measurements, we cannot comment on whether your isolation clip idea is the best.

- Without seeing how many ducts you have and where they're situated, we cannot comment on how you should go about isolating them.

- Without SPL measurements or a list of instruments you plan to record, we cannot comment on how many layers of beef up material you need on your subfloor or what form of construction you need for your studio.

- Without a budget we cannot advise whether your build is possible.

- We also need to know if you're able to make drastic changes to the building (do you own it?)

Hopefully you can answer these questions so we can get you on your way!

Greg
It appears that you've made the mistake most people do. You started building without consulting this forum.
