Adding mass to leaf with carpet?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Adding mass to leaf with carpet?

Post by Johnbroadb »

Ive just finished putting blue board up as my first leaf. I haven't started putting up my interior wall frame yet. There is a carpet shop down the end of my street and the always have rolls of used carpet out the back, I was wondering if I glued that to the blue board would that help increase my mass or being that it is carpet it might do something weird instead? I just saw potential for free mass and was seeing if it would be worth the effort.

Thanks

My vote goes with "something weird". And to that I'd add "unpredictable". So if you want an unpredictable weird wall, then go for it! :)

Seriously, if you can't find any research on it where that has been tested in a proper acoustic lab, and the results show a substantial improvement, then forget it. Acoustics is often non-intuitive, and things often don't actually work the way you though the would at first glance... until you analyze them in detail and figure out you forgot to account for some effect or other. Carpet is porous, has air trapped in it, is flexible, but I doubt that it would act as a CLD, and certainly not as limp mass in that configuration, so I really wouldn't bother, unless you are up for a few weeks of experimentation with different arrangements, and careful testing...

Thanks heaps, I was thinking it was a bit weird. Its one of those "ingenious" ideas that come while I'm laying in bed thinking about the project.
I think i will give it a miss. Cheers!
