Acoustic Measurements

Post by caseyLA »

Just wondering if anyone has made any high resolution low-end frequency response measurements in their home studios. I've been playing around with the ETF acoustic software (www.etfacoustic.com), and the results are really interesting. I want to do a complete series of before and after graphs after my insulation traps are installed.

I've seen plenty of frequency curves in both treated and non-treated rooms, but never any of the same room measured before and then after bass trapping was applied. Does anyone have any direct comparisons of their rooms they would like to share?

I think small-room measurement comparisons like this would go a long way in figuring out exactly what works and what doesn't, and how it works, rather than relying on subject listening tests.

Casey, so far all I've found time for is to dnl the demo and it's pretty crippled, so not much there. Their site is really informative, though. For more feedback, check out these -

Eventually I intend to get their entire package, all software add-ons and their mic and preamp - till then, all I can do is point to links like the above.

You're definitely on the right track on the before/after measurements, and we will all be more than grateful for any followup you post... Steve

See the Minitraps demonstration video on my company's site. It shows exactly what you're asking for. I didn't use ETF, but the data is very accurate. If you're in a rush and just want the answer, below are the same results of those tests plotted as a graph.

Steve,

If your're interested in the follow up, I posted the results over at the studiotips forum:

Here's the RT60 and a measurement at one of the five positions I used down the center of the room. BEFORE = BLUE, AFTER = RED.

The room was 9 x 12 x 8.5 with 128 square feet of 4" thick 703 absorbers.
