Fabric panel covering and fire retardant application

Post by ToneAlive »

Hey everyone..so I am pretty interested in using the burlap fabric from atsacoustics.com to cover some panels I will be making. They sell it for $5 a yard but say that for an additional $4.25, they can add a fire retardant chemical that brings it up to a certain NFPA 701 fire code. Do you guys know if there is a good alternative to adding a fire retardant chemical? It seems like nearly doubling the cost of the order is way too much and applying a chemical DIY should be a much better option.

Backing up a step though, have you all found better fabric solutions for less than $6/ yard?

Check and see if you have something like a 'JoAnn's Fabrics' in your area.

Every month they offer a 50% discount on fabrics 8)

The material I used is called 'Osnaburg #421'. Sells for $6/yd, got it for 1/2.

Search internet for a home brew formula for retardant treatment. Might be a bit of a hassle,
but fortunately, I had a friend who works alot with fabrics and she was kind enough to do
this process. She was experienced in making costumes for Dance schools, etc.

OH ... here's a link to the product she used. Recommended by Rod Gervais.

Hope that helped.

FWIW,
I went to the local Apothecary, told him what I needed, and he sold me a waterglass solution which I can mix with 5 parts water and spray on the material. I remember using this stuff as a kid for making fireproof matches as a joke.
