Too much for this room (2,7m * 6,4m) ?Please help on layout

Post by Angelsound »

Hello Studio design addicts :)

I got offered a little room for my studio for free.Tried to design some layouts but nothing found what I like. Please help and give me some oppinions :-)

So here are the facts :

- Room length 6,4meter and width 2,7meter and height 3,00meter.

- This will be only used for electronic music and post production. No recording of acoustic instruments or vocals.

- floor is carpeted, walls and ceiling are concrete (or something similar)

- In the drawing on the right wall there is a window 4 meter long beginning from the upper wall (and going from floor to ceiling). I have added an additional photo on that.

- On the bottom left there is a wood door (0,9 meter width) beginning 0,6meter away from bottom wall

- desk and racks are not build yet.So I am very variable in the design of them.

- The room is not bought so I dont know how long I can stay there.Because of that I need some kind of modular acoustic treatment like the basstraps and sidewall absorbers on John´s site.So that i could get them in easily and take them with me when I am moving out.

My main problem is the width of the room.I dont know how to add sidewall absorbers in such little place. In Johns drawing one absorber is 20cm in depth,so with both walls covered I got only a 2,3meter wide room :-(

Also some questions :

- Do you think there would be much advantages when soffit mounting and not having splayed walls ? I think there is not enough space for doing angeled walls

- Perhaps it would be easier to find a good design when speakers are on the longer wall. But everyone says this would be really bad for the acoustics in the room :(
---------------------------------------

This is the gear list.I thought you would need it when designing a new layout.

- On the main desk there are 3 x 17" CRT Monitors (one monitor is 0,4meter wide and 0,5meter depth). This is where I am working most of the time.

- A masterkeyboard (1,3 meter x 0,4 meter) Should be on main desk or nearby

- Two Keyboard Synths (same sizes as masterkeybard),not so important where they stand.

- Speakers are genelec 1030

- As I said racks are not build yet. There have to be around 45 spaces (1 space is the typical 4,5cm of a standart effect gear like a lexicon mpx1.Hope you know what I mean.Dont know how its called in english :D )

- A digital mixer (0,6 meter width x 0,8 meter depth) would be nice near main desk or on top of racks

- A couch and a little desk for the couch would be also nice :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So here is my attempt :

and this is the window I talked about. This is not the room I am speaking of but same window and same look

hi Heiko - it is narrow isn't it. I really can't offer much more than what you've suggested in your drawing. Turning it sideways wouldn't even fit.

I'd just add insulation down the side walls to stop the bounce and cover the window with the same.

You have one direction where you could add some angular walls and that's in the ceiling. I'd build a reflective cloud over the console area and another over the rack space/couch that reflects the signals back to the rear of the room.

cheers
John
