Optimal room dimension advice needed please

Post by stevenicel »

Hi all. I am in need of a little assistance.
I have a space that is 5 x 8.4 metres and i want to start by building one room for mixing and production purposes and leave enough space for a recording room which i could build at a later date. I was looking at a room dimension of say, 4.5 x 5.0 metres with a ceiling height of 3.0 metres. Would this space work? If not, could anyone suggest a size that would be acoustically better....
The space is inside an existing huge commercial shed in a quiet country location with a smooth concrete slab as a floor.

Thank you for reading...

If those were your actual inside dimensions to hard walls, there are no modal problems - have you checked out any of the plans here to see if anything comes close to working for you?

Hi Steve and thanks for the reply,
I have done quite a bit of searching on the forum over the past months, but nothing has seemed to cover what i am looking at, although I have not read everything and may have quite easily missed a post that comes close.....
My actual inside hard wall dinensions will be more like 4.8 x 4.3 x 3.0. But not exactly certain on that yet, it may be possible to get the full 4.5 x 5.0.

A few more questions:
1) How close could the 4.3 dimension get to the 4.8 (ie 4.3x4.8, 4.4x4.8, 4.5x4.8) before i would start having modal problems?

2) And is a 3.0 metre ceiling more beneficial than a 2.7 in either room scenario?

I have plenty of vertical height to spare but didnt want to go to the extra expense and work of ten foot ceilings if it wasnt really necessary.
Thanks again

8.4 x 5 is a reasonable space - this drawing is to scale.

cheers

Hi again all,

I have decided on a final exterier control room size of 5.3 x 4.6 metres with a 3 metre ceiling. I was hoping to angle the two long side walls so that they taper in towards the front of the room, as apposed to having two angled sections as per johns drawing above. Can anybody help with a taper that would be beneficial? (if at all possible?). Would a taper of...600mm be enough over the whole room length? Or would this be a negligable benefit? Simply leaving the two angled section wall as the only "real" option?

I was planning on using corner bass traps as per johns plans, and a ceiling absorber to help kill flutter from floor to ceiling..... Along with some side and rear wall absorption.

Thank You. Any help is trully appreciated.
