That's kind of like asking "How long should a piece of rope be, and what color is best?".
The answer: It all depends on what you want to do with it!
For every guy who tells you why he loves his software, ten others will tell you what that particular software is terrible. Ditto for consoles. Of course, if you have absolutely stacks of money to spend, then for a console its hard to go wrong with an SSL or Neve. On the other end of the scale, some folks use Behringer consoles...
