old bathroom

Post by Fresnog »

Hello all, I have been reading these forums for about 3 days and this is my first post.

I have an studio apartment that has had the bathroom totally gutted/stripped down to: concrete floor, wooden studs with batted fiberglass insulation between most of them and that's about it.

The room measures 8' long x 5' wide x 8' high.

I have hung some 5' x 8' rugs along the walls - screwed into the studs and over the 6" insulation between studs.

Yes, I know, I know, this is pretty pointless to do for sound reinforcement, which brings me to my real first question.

Would it be better to leave things as is and add some bass traps to the room, OR put up sheetrock over the wood framing and then add bass traps and other panels?

Looking for a place to start

Well, it's not going to leave you much room for a drum kit... you planning on just using this for your isolation booth? Or is this supposed to be the loud closet you put a guitar amp into when you want to record the sound of a full-volume guitar without getting a visit from the police?

If you need sound isolation, you should put up at least 2 layers of drywall. If you can, put up resilient channel underneath them. Once you're there, you can start with the room treatment, which will most likely be pretty extreme since it's such a small room. If you put a panel of 703 across every corner in the room (including ceiling/wall corners) you'll probably have covered a good portion of the walls. This may or may not be enough...

Hope this at least gets you started...

Actually, I guess I should have mentioned that I am using this room for mixing. All of my recording is direct to computer, so I don't have a need for soundproofing, just something to help me hear what I should through nearfields.

Thanks :)

Greg,

That makes things much easier. If you're on a tight budget, your best bet is to cover some of the surfaces with rigid fiberglass, making it even thicker in the corners to give more absorption at bass frequencies.
