Glass Bricks ?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Glass Bricks ?

Post by quiet »

In the interest of letting light into a studio from the outside world, but avoiding really expensive-to-build windows with thick glass & / or double pans ...

... Does anyone build with glass bricks?

Does anyone know their specs as far as transmission of sound?

I did a search for glass bricks but came up with nada.

Which may not bode well for this little brainstorm ...

Yes they work fine. Use the mass equation for transmission loss calculation.

You haven't priced glass blocs or glaziers' charges for installing glass blocks. :!:

PPG makes solid blocks (most are hollow) that list the STC.
Lay them yourself! I just did four block windows for my home addition. It was my first experience with laying glass block but it went fine. It took me some time but they look great.

In Australia, the same surface area of glass blocks costs about the same supplied as 12.38mm laminated glass supplied and installed.

They look good for security though.

Hi All, sorry for dredging up an old short thread, but I thought it would be better than starting a new one on basically the same subject...

My main question is, does anyone know of a brand of solid glass blocks or bricks currently available in the US, because I couldn't find anything on a Google search.

Secondary question is if there's any new or revised thoughts on solid glass bricks or the standard hollow kind? I have the possibility of installing them to allow a little more natural light into my garage M-A-M build and I want to weigh the pros, cons, and options available.

Thanks!
Geoff

Try searching for "solid glass block", instead of brick.

I found these with a quick search. Not sure if all sell in the USA or export to the USA, but some seem to. The first two are in the USA:

http://innovatebuildingsolutions.com/pr ... ted-blocks

http://www.adelaideglassblocks.com.au/

https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/solid-glass-brick.html

But one question: Why do you want solid glass bricks? That's rather expensive....

I mostly wanted to price them out to see how ridiculously overpriced an endeavor they would be. I have been in a space with lots of natural light for the last year and a half, and the idea of going back to having very little is a little sad for me. Since this new spot is in my home (garage), any investment will be mine so it's at least worth considering. Thanks for your thoughts though!

Large windows might also be an option. You can still get good isolation if the windows are designed and built properly.
