O.K...this may seem silly...but I am wondering if I can use my beer can collection as an effective diffuser in the back of a room I'm building! Because of the cylindrical nature of the cans, the space between the cans, and the wooden shelves (about 3" deep), it seems like it could work. All of the cans are made of steel (vs. aluminum). I have several of these panels I could hang. Any thoughts?

The radius of a beer can is rather small. If the cans are lined up in rows, they will only provide diffusion in the very highest frequency range. You probably could bring the effective diffusion down into the midrange by staggering the cans like I've illustrated below. You want the pattern to be fairly random, and different on each shelf.
