Temporary homestudio setup..

Post by Emil »

Hi,

I just started reading this forum recently, and it seems to be an endless source of knowledge. I should present myself. I'm a 24 year old music producer currently making my living as a "live tech" at the local consert hall. I just finished a worldmusic album for the swedish market together with a bunch of really nice people from sweden, india and congo brazzaville, and has been releasing some dance music before that.

But i have been thinking about improving the room with removable stuff that i could bring to the next location aswell since i don't have a clue how long i will be in this basement of mine. So i thougt you guys might have some good ideas. I have the space and the tools to build whatever is needed. But will try to keep it as simple as possible.

Image

My ceiling height is 2,21m (7,3 feet)
and the absorbers in the corners on the picture is 1,2x0.6m of rockwool for floor insulation, quite heavy. And there is a lot of fabrics behind the monitors, but this should be changed into some sort of absorber.
And there is a big thick rug on the floor covering most of the room.
I also put up some fabric in the ceiling covering the front of the room.
The monitors is Genelec 1030 and a sub.
So, what would you do?
Peace!

Hi Emil - gee you swedes amaze me with your command of english :)

What would I do to improve it?? I'd soffit mount the genelecs in a proper splayed front end and put all your wool on the rear wall.

Check out this room http://johnlsayers.com/Pages/Hello_Testing.htm

it's smaller than yours.

cheers

Gee, :) looks really nice, but i won't have something like that finished before it's time to move to a new location.
Do i really gain that much by soffit mounting the monitors, compared to using some proper absortion behind the speakers, and having them freestanding?

And if i where to build a splayed wall, would it be long enough? Since it cannot block the door on the left.

Is there any other solutions, perhaps a tad bit more flexible that i should embrace?

Peace!

well not really - you've utilised the room as much as you can - your firing down the length of the room, you've deadened the area around your speakers and treated the ceiling - all the right things.

I'd temporarily put the sub where you sit, then crawl around on your hands and knees til you find a place where the bass sounds best - odds are, it will NOT be in the center of any room dimension. then, when you are sure, put the sub where your head was and your head back in the chair... Steve
