My Next remote truck

Here is a rough plan for my next remote truck. I need feedback as to improvements. Treat it as a normal control room. (I am)

A tad narrow of course, but deep.

7'7" x 20' is the useable space (O.D.)

Brian,

That looks pretty strightforward. The only thing that stands out to me, and I add my disclaimer that I'm only going by gut feeling here and not any expertise, is that I wonder if you need to do something with the long, straight side walls to break it up a bit (some slat resonators or even just some random absorption, maybe?).

Otherwise it looks cool. Ever since I saw your first post somewhere a few months back about wanting to put together a new truck, I cannot look at a semi or even a cargo truck without wondering about the logistics of turning that particular vehicle into a remote recording truck.

Hi Bryan - hope you had a great holiday break mate.

Bryan - I reckon that if you want a mobile studio in a semi the only way is to have a unit that opens out on rollers and doubles the size. I've seen it in mobile homes where the whole side expands outwards like this.

Bryan, I'm assuming that you will be using this for tracking, not final mixes. So I'm making the assumption that the dimensions are not nearly as critical.

John, would the expense to have the side roll out be worth it if you aren't doing final mixes in it?

No Eric - but often mobile vans are used to broadcast live where you are in fact the final mix

This is not a semi, it is a box truck. It is not in the budget to open the side walls out so I have to make do with what I have.

I'd love one of those 200K mobile homes with the dual sliders that would be awesome.....

Yes in Broadcast situations (Live to 2trk) this will be the final. I have done plenty of that work in my previous truck. I want this one much tighter for that type of work.

Especially live radio broadcasts.

Darryl, That long wall was a concern of mine John..Anybody...Any good ideas with what to do with that???

Besides absorb the hell out of it.

I do plan on slat resonators up in the front there. I want to wow my clientele.

Would that long wall be a problem? It looks like it is past the mix position so any reflections would go past your head. You could also do a sawtooth wall. Absorption on the area facing the front wall and leave the angled face reflective.

edit: unfortunatly i couldnt locate an actual floorplan for the thing, the company hype those say that the room was shifted 7 degrees and because of that it could retain the perfect shape for 5.1 monitoring (this one was made specially for that purpose).

John, Nice specs in the 4pcf stuff The stiffness will work for me.

Just acuple of Q's you would recommend using this in the side walls of the truck as oppossed to 4" Mineral wool???

Of course you know I am thinking about cost. I have to build some kind of outerwall barrier. My Last truck was a converted Refrigeration truck so you know I had 1" of insul and then the vinyl faced paneling they put in refrigeration trucks to keep them cool. So i gotta go to these extremes for this one. I was thinking of building your inside out wall.

and the inside out ceiling (as i call it)

Keep in mind this as well. the 1' between the front of the console wall and the front exterior cCR wall is all for bass trapping. Hangers are a bad idea so i was looking at that dutch truck that is a pretty creative thing they did. I can emulate that easily

Ok starting to spec out the cost for everything.

Just want an opinion. I was considering doing maybe a combo 6" and 3" Resonator slats. Just trying for a different look than my in house spot. John any ideas???

And wow this is gonna a busy year. I just got a call to mix a 5.1 DVD recording for major release later this year so i gotta start that Surrund room cosntruction like the day I finish this truck build.

Like 24 songs. 4 Artists.

I am gnna steal from the dutch truck and do a honeycomb bass trapp desing with dowel spacers to hold it all in place.

I cant wait to start. This will be a rapid build now that I have a clue.

The treatments is what took me the longest this time figuring out how to build it. Now I think I will move swifetr. this truck has to be done in 2 weeks. That will be a major challenge. But hey I live in Motown we build cars in 13-20 hours. And they run. LOL

Just so guys know. My cost estimate thus far for the contrsuction portion is 1200.00.

Of Course I already have all my gear from the last truck
