Help newbie with design!

Post by gavinchan »

First off, what an awsome resource this web site is for people like me just starting out! Kudos to Mr Sayers and everybody else who contributes to this forum.

I have been given a space in an existing building to build a small/medium sized facility, and am after any design sugestions you guys might have. The existing structure has concrete floors/ceilings and the thick walls are double brick. The thin walls are just flimsy office partitions. The ceiling in the smaller room is 260cm and in the larger room 320cm high. I will be booking some time on the phone with John Sayers in the future, but I would like to get a good starting point on this forum.

Any suggestions/questions welcome!

Most of my work is going to be mixing / production. I would like the option of being able to record a full drum kit, but its not too essential.
I also would like a small "machine" room to lock away all the noisy PC's! At this point I'm not sure if I can mix in that smaller room (too small?) and have one big tracking area, or whether I'm better off using that smaller room for tracking and having one big control room, that I could change stuff around If I wanted to record drums in there. I'm playing around with some positions in Smartdraw at the moment, but I'm only a novice so its difficult to find the most efficent use of space.

Update! I'm able to use up that bottom right hand corner. So here's my suggestion... (very rough, not sure of exact angles I should be using).

From what you said i would assume that most of your work will be control room oreintated. The small room is tooo small for that so I'd suggest the large room for your control room. In your plan you are making the control room even smaller whilst hoping for all the extras - coffee room and two booths.

To make a really nice control room I'd use the whole large area. It will give you a full 5m (16ft) depth like this.

Thankyou sooo much..... This is the kind of advice I was hoping for. I would happy with what you have drawn out there.
Question: The sliding doors, are they glass? If so, are they special accoustic ones, where should I go to get quotes?
