AudioGrotto Build Diary

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Hello Nativluv....

Well, I can't tell you that it doesn't act like a third leaf. Don't really know. However, its a strange case since the speaker is really part of the leaf. The soffit should act more like part of the speaker than a third leaf. Now, for sound coming in from another room, perhaps it will lessen the TL. Problem is, in order for the soffit to act like an infinite baffle, the wall needs to be sealed all the way around. There are soffit designs that do not have sealed edges, but I would consider them a hybrid design and not a true soffit. The experts perhaps can chime in here, but for me, I'd rather have a true soffit and better low freq response from the speakers than a marginally better TL.

Thanks for the info Ashley, I'll see if I can dig a little deeper into this subject, because I have seen plenty of people using gb on the outer layer of their soffit mounts.

I have been at work on this for just over a year now and have had about 15-20 people in various trades working on it. Not all at once but depending on what stage we are in. You need at least two highly skilled guys and another two laborers to do the grunt work to keep things rolling on track I think.

Good luck!

oh shit!! NOW someone tells me!!

I've had septic (2), concrete (6), masonry (2), framing (3), HVAC (4) and electrical (4) contractors... and I've been at it for just under 6 years... actually 2.5 in earnest... and I've done probably 80% of the rest of the work without any help at all. I did have 4 friends help with the OSB on the ceiling, and one friend help me with the insulation and the ceiling gypsum.

I can tell you that Ashley's about dead on with the recommendation for labor/assistance.

If I could get another hand for about 2 weeks, I could finish my studio, otherwise, I've got about 8-12 weeks worth of work left. It's the small simple things that having that extra hand will cut so much time. Just snapping a chalk line across the ceiling can take 10-15 minutes by yourself, when you have a second person, it takes less than a minute.

If I extrapolate backwards a bit, just having one extra person consistently show up, even unskilled, I could have been done 12-16 months ago.

Didn't mean to hijack... but having some help is all important!

All I can say is "wow"!

My wife and I just went through your entire thread with jaws dropped...I am getting ready to build out the garage in the house we just bought and I may be sold on dying the concrete....it is absolutely gorgeous!

What type of dye did you use? I am assuming this was much cheaper than wood?

Anyways, best of luck to you...this is an outstanding build with a fantastic attention to detail.

we had to get the second control room up and running quickly in order to get a whole bunch of equipment out of the sanctuary space where it was temporarily. First go at popping the lights in and see the results.

OK, onto the console build..... this thing is turning into a Pew Transformer...... Go figure. Its turned out to be a great asset to have all of these pews. I couldn't sell them for what they were worth and I certainly couldn't afford all this solid oak woodwork we are getting by using the material. The console itself would be thousands in materials alone. Its the green thing to do and looks bitchin' if I do say so myself.

Righto, piccie-dom cometh.....

Hey Bassman,

Do you need some more fabric for those side-traps?

Looks great, by the way.
