NEED QUICK HELP -- Window Construction

Post by spicyitaliano »

The construction crew is here for day 3 of construction of my new project studio. We have come across one minor problem: The height of the window. I'm using an Argosy Dual-15 console for the main desk, with two LCD screen on top. I've got Mackie HR824 monitors on two stands behind it.

My question: What is a good height for the bottom of the control room window looking into the live room? What I'm working with now is 30 inches, with a 6X3 window in the spot.

Please help me out before the guys finish up that wall!!
Thanks guys.

You should be just fine with those dimensions - a 6' tall guy would only need to be a foot or so from the window in order for you to see the top of his head, and unless you're recording dwarfs in low-rider wheel chairs, the bottom height should let you see anything you need to see... Steve

Well, our original plans that we gave to the builders read at 36" of the ground. What do you have? Do you have any more thoughts?

36" sounds kind of high.
Do a quick "mock-up" - cut out the size of your window from cardboard or paper or something, prop it up against something where it will ultimately go, and look through it from the mix position.

Actually we did do that. We simply setup a chair in the approx mix position. Then we tied strings to nails of the two side walls marking the 30" height and 36" height. This way we could have someone stand on the other side and we could see all the places that there were potential view problems.

Interestingly, whether it was the 30" height off the ground (the window is 36" tall) or the 36" height off the ground, you could easily see people from the waist up from anywhere in the room. 36" seems too high? It's a good thing you told me now. I had the builders do everything but that wall, just incase I changed my mind on the height.

I've done extensive searching on the web and I've done searching on all the online disscusion forums. No matter what I try, I can't seem to find anything on this specific topic. This really is a problem. I live out here in the boonies and there isn't anyone around this town who even deals with these things. So one-on-one discussions concerning this is unlikely.

Anybody wanna step in?

Welcome to the sometimes-frustrating club of building a studio -- highly specialized regimes of knowledge that interelate in many ways, but confuse specialists. Anyhow, maybe your over thinking it -- do the Mock up, like suggested, console, monitor screens and see what looks the best. I personally think the window behind the console gets problematic with all the monitors people will probably have in the future.

Best,

Dave
