Bass Traps With Diffusion/Ethan?

Post by MJGreeneAudio »

What would happen in you built a trap like Ethans DIY Traps but also put something like a 1X2 spacing (furring) strip on the front and on that mounted RPG Skyline diffusors? If you are careful not to dampen the plywood front would this work or cause additional resonance problems? It would incure an additional air gap but would it still let the panel resonate and also give diffusion?

Just a thought and thanks for your time.

The Skyline diffusors, if I'm not mistaken, aren't absorptive but injection molded plastic - mounting them in front of panel traps would decrease the Pressure levels available to resonate the panel, so the trap would lose bass absorption - by how much, it's hard to say.

Generally, unless you have at least 12 feet or so between your head and the rear of the room, you need absorption at the rear instead of diffusion. Otherwise, early reflections from the rear, even diffuse ones, can cause smearing of the stereo image by phase cancellations (comb filtering)

Several people have successfully mounted absorptive materials in front of (but not touching) panel traps, this is a good rear wall treatment for small to medium-sized control rooms, as well as a possible wall treatment for medium-sized vocal/iso booths. You can tune the traps to modal frequencies and add broader band absorption to the front... Steve
Soooo, when a Musician dies, do they hear the white noise at the end of the tunnel??!? Hmmmm...
