Soffits - step by step ?

Post by Dabugen »

Hello to the whole Community,

i want to build soffits for my monitors that are also suitable for a further upgrade of them.

I am from Germany and are not a very good "builder", altough i am familiar with the basics of acoustic.

What i want to know, can i buy Soffits somewhere or do i have to build them on my own? If so, would it be possible to make a step by step explantion with pictures for a very beginner in this topic? I would also make a donation or send some money to the guy who will make this guide for me.

The thing is, it has to be easy to understand for me and that they are large enough in size to fit my future monitors (right now i own KRK KRok´s which cables i could connect trough a hole on the back of the soffit).

I seen many great tutorials about soffits here, but you need to have some more knowledge already to make them (at least i do ;) ).

I would be very happy if someone can help me with that as i really looking forward to the advantages of Soffits.

Thanks for your help!

Have a nice weekend.

I've used the KROK's for several years, they are one of the best in their price range IMO - one problem with soffiting them is that you would need to make a special cut-out just for them, in order for soffiting to work. This can be done, but it will be necessary or the soffits won't work. By that, I mean that the KROK's special trapezoidal shape is unlike any other speaker I've seen, and the cutout in soffits where the speaker goes, MUST fit fairly snugly or the low frequency wavelengths can still "wrap around" the speaker, defeating the purpose of the soffit.

I'd be willing to try helping, but it would be easier if you have the ability to post a picture of your present mixing area so I can see what would be necessary. Soffits need to be quite large, at least in the plane that's coincident with the front speaker baffle -

One other thing - do you have access to any tools, and if so which ones? Any experience at all? If so, what exactly? Anything you can tell me about your abilities/experience/situation/budget will help figure out what/how you can proceed.

If you can, please post a picture of your mix area and I'll see what I can do. Try and keep the picture somewhere near 750 x 600, it works better for not having to scroll sideways when reading the text... Steve

Hi Knightfly,

thanks for the fast reply. I think we would be best if we could do a live-chat about this topic, if your time allows it only!
I think we will setup faster that way then replying on the forum when we do it in realtime.
I have plenty of tools available here (big garage and working area) but let us talk about this in the chat.

Would be cool if you can email me at dabugen@yahoo.com for further details and if you know a place where to chat. Right now i will go to bed, its 6:19 in the morning here and i will be up in about 8 hours again. So just email me if that would be possible.

BIG thanks already !!!!

Greets and a nice sunday.

Actually, this is more Thomas's area of expertise - I'm not trying to back out of anything, it's just that I'd been trying to help out while Thomas has been working long hours in his speaker design business, but he is much more knowledgable in these areas than I am.

Because of that, I think it would be best to wait and see if he has the time to get involved in something like this - if he does, you will be better served since a large part of my understanding in this area has come from him.

Thomas, please feel free to take over here, I don't want to get in anyone's way... Steve

Hi Knightfly,

thanks for your reply again. Seeing your first reply i think you know enough about this whole topic to help me out, but again, if you dont´t have the time or the energy, its no problem if you won´t.

Maybe someone else would help me building these Soffits step by step?

Btw, i am having massive problems with the forum, i need to re-register each time to be able to reply. Everytime i try to login with my normal login and the dabugen2 account i type in username + pass and it just sends me to the login + pass page again without an error. All other PHPBB forums i post on work pretty fine, so would be nice if that could be fixed or is it a problem on my site? I also tried to let me send my password again and the forum said it did sent it, but no mail arrived yet.

You can delete dabugen2 and dabugen-temp if i or you get my normal account to work again.

thanks for your help.

Hi ;)

seems to work well with dabugen2 now at least :-)

Back on this topic, is there anyone out who can help me building these soffits? Its just more the thing that i am looking for the design and having problems with some of the explanations and materials. I can then build them on my own (have all the tools and can get the material). Just a good plan would be needed for me as i am not a technical-drawing freak :/

Thanks for your help guys and a nice weekend.
