where i should place the bass traps and the Broadband

Post by Disasster »

Hey,

Im wondering where i should place the bass traps and the Broadband absorbers in my room. I have 36peices of 2X4 2" thick 703.

The room is 10X10, there is a window in the middle of the wall(1'2" from the roof and 4' from the floor). A door in the corner, and a closet on the same wall as the closet.

I'll draw a picture tomorrow.

Thank you

This is a deep subject, and a complete answer requires far more than will fit into a single reply here. The short version is:

* Broadband (not tuned) bass traps straddling as many corners as you can manage, including the wall-ceiling corners.

* Mid/high frequency absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling.

* Some additional amount of mid/high absorption and/or diffusion on any large areas of bare parallel surfaces, such as opposing walls or the ceiling if the floor is reflective.

For the complete story see my Acoustics FAQ. There's a lot of additional non-sales technical information on my company's site, linked under my name below.

A square room needs even more bass trapping than usual. So double up those 2-inch panels to be 4 inches thick, and cover as many corners as you can manage.

So make every pannel 4" thick? and put them:

-In all 4 corners
-corners connecting the wall and roof
-And then find the reflection points and put them there

Can i put to much up, or is there never to much?

Also, on the side walls, should i make the pannels 2" thick instead or 4"? Or should every thing be 4" thick due to the size and shape of the room?

Also, what should i use to attach 2 peices of 703 together?

Thank you

Yes, exactly.

You can't have to much bass trapping, but you can have too much absorption at mid and high frequencies.

Two inches is okay on the side walls, but four inches is better.

Friction?

There's no need to glue them. Just stack them adjacent and wrap them as one unit.

Alright, and with that being said, if i made every pannel 4" thick wont there be to much absorption at mid and high frequencies.....so what should i do to stop this? and to how many pannels.

Thank you.

When adding a closed material, like plastic, in front of the absorbers (or wrapped) the mids/highs will be reflected back in the room but still absorb low-end.

Tinfoil is a bit thick, and too noisy (may make crinkly noises when loud playing happens) - better is thin plastic, like painter's drop cloths of about 1 mil thickness (0.025mm) - you can just hang these symmetrically around your room (if it's a control room) some on each side, til it sounds as bright as you want it - then, fasten them permanently (staples are fine) and cover with your cloth of choice... There are PLENTY of examples here in this forum and prolly on the net. I'd suggest SEARCH and catch up on some reading. Seriously, check this very forum and you'll be surprised. (and it's fun too!)
(some use frames for example)

further more you might wanna update yer profile, where ya from etc.
