Helmholtz Query

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Helmholtz Query

Post by Rick Hollis »

Quick Question for ya's.
Do the slats on a Helmhotz resonater actually touch the insulation behind the fabric or do they resonate freely? I'm building some into the rear corners of my control room much like the Egan sound control room on your website. I've lined the inside of my cavities with 4 inch rockwool behind acoustic hangers. The rockwool is not touching the slats and the slats produce audible resonances (about 150- 400hz) when tapped like a low pitch xylophone. Is this normal?

Yes that is normal.

Having the material touch the back of the slats creates a damping effect for even better absorption.
