Totally Off Topic Question

I've been admiring everyone's photo avatars. How do you get a photo small enough to match the size restraints (ie. 6k)? Or for that matter what can you use to design a custom avatar?

Well, a misspent afternoon has allowed me to figure this out. Now to come up with something decent.
