How to use REW, What is a Bass Trap, a diffuser, the speed of sound, etc.

Computer simulations of acoustics

Post by ozymandias »

Hi all!

My first post here - It's been a pleasure lurking up until now :).
I am trying to gain better understanding of acoustics by writing a computer program to simulate the wave equation - so far in just one dimension using a simple Finite Differences scheme. I'd appreciate some help with a few points I'm stuck with.
1. Is it possible to model a "speaker" with the 1D wave equation? What sort of source does it correspond to?
2. I understand p=0 (zero pressure) at the boundaries equal to completely reflective walls, but how do I model absorption? What sort of boundary conditions do I need?
If you know of a good paper on the subject I'd also appreciate it a lot.
Thanks for the help! :)

Oz, welcome; I hate to send anyone somewhere else, but you'll find a lot more people willing/able to help with this here

I'm just "spread too thin" to have time to get into this sort of thing ATM, sorry... Steve

Thanks for the link, Steve - just got another forum to lurk around ;).
I've got to say you're running a great forum here, I learn a lot from just reading posts. Keep up the good work!

Thanks; just noticed you've apparently missed the "location" request found here

there will likely be more questions I can (or have already) answered, and it's much easier to recommend practical solutions if we know where in the world you're located; check out that link for more. Thanks again... Steve

Hey Steve & all,

I live in Israel. However the wave equation is the same worldwide  .
