Active or passive?
What type music?
How loud do you want?
Active, best bang for buck I've seen are the Behringer Truth 2031A, at $339 a pair from Musician's Friend, Guitar Centers, American Musical Supply, etc -
Passives, these have gotten better press than anything in their price range

If you haven't already used this combo, make sure phantom power is turned on for the mic channel or it won't work - if possible, either get (or make) a pop filter and put it about 3 inches away from the mic so the singer doesn't swallow the mic - this will give a more even level so you avoid clipping. Set your levels at each stage so they're just below clipping for best signal-to-noise ratio.
Don't try to crowd your levels too much, people ALWAYS sing louder for the actual performance than they ever did during sound check.
You still didn't answer about what kind of SPACES are available to record - a closet, bathroom, spare bedroom, etc - for a dead sound (add electronic reverb later) using a closet with all the clothes still in it works pretty well usually. Just push 'em aside enough for the singer to get in with the mic.
Use a mic stand and don't let the singer handle that mic, it's too sensitive to handling noise... Steve
