Young Musician Seeking Help With First Project Studio

Hello All,

I have been reading the forum and i love it! So i figured it'd be the best place to get opinions on my project studio.

I am an 18 year old musician seeking help as i am designing a home studio. I have a decent computer based setup(look at my signature). I've recently been able to take out my bed and chest ect. out of my room and move them into a seperate room (benefits of being the youngest child and oldest sister being married and moving out, SCORE). Anyway, I am setting up this room to be a dedicated music room/recording studio.

My purposes and uses:
I'm a guitarist, keyboard player and singer.
I play rock and metal and it will be loud.

LOCATION:
My room is about 100yds from Interestate 10. (the interstate is directly out from the bigger window)
The noise is pretty bad. So isolation from the outside noise will be needed. But luckily no neighbors near the house.Also this is on the third story of the house and through great luck the sound doesn't reach my parents room so they won't be bothered either.


The room will mostly be used for song writing/practice sessions. I use the setup to write and arrange songs. But i'd like to also record some live drums and other instruments; seperately of course.

The "control" room will be used for mixing, editing, ect and will also be used for recording drums.

The closet will be converted into a vocal booth; in which both vocals and acoustic guitar will be recorded.(or not...i'm relatively new to this so what would be the best use for this closet?)

I've included measurements and pictures of just about everything i can think of.

What i need to know is this:

Where would be the best spot to place my desk and monitors?

I'd like to put a new door in the closet with a window. Good idea? Should I just cut a hole in the door and stuff it insolation and attach two pieces of glass?

[b]How I should acoustically treat the room control and closet?
(One thing I'm Worried about it the corner by the doors. I could really put a bass trap in that corner. Could I? Plus the room isn't very symmetrical. But Hey its free at my parents house so i can't complain.)[/b]

What is the best way to efficently use this space?

I'm about to start college so money is tight so i want to keep it under 1000 but can go over. Hopefully these solutions will be able to be used in future projects as well. Thats why im not to touchy on money.

Keep in mind in a year or so i'll be moving out and getting my own place. So i'd like most things to be able to moved in the future if at all possible. But with that said I can attach things to walls and things of that nature. I won't be able to add more sheets of drywall or anything like that.

Just as a note. Down the hall next to my room is a bathroom. I could use that for some recording as well. A drum set couldn't fit in it. But anyway just wanted to add that.

I hope that this setup will help me on my path of one day owning or operating in a perfessional recording environment.

Oh in addition I'd like to say that I -and the rest of my family- am very good with my hands. I have helped build two houses and a barn. My brothers owned a fencing business. So I can get my hands on just about any tool i need.

I'll have to get at this tomorrow nite, but just to let you know - posting the same questions in more than one forum only causes people to get confused, since the two threads will generally go off in different ways and become twice as hard to track. Okay thanks Steve. I was a little hesitant on posting it twice for that very reason.

Also I have another quick question. There is a fan in the middle of ceiling of this room. Should I take it out? Its pretty quiet. And it would be off most the time (always when recording is taking place in the control room) But wouldn't would like a revolving diffusor of sorts?

Thanks alot for those links steve. Im sorry for posting such a opened ended post. I've been reading a lot more posts and links found around the site and have learned a ton more. I'm working up a plan for the acoustics and i'll submit it prolly later next week. And you can critique it for me. Thanks a lot for all the posts you and all the other have put up. SOOO MUCH TO READ ITS AWESOME!
