dimmers on a budget?

Post by michael dukes »

So I'm adding a humble writing/overdub room onto the back of my house. Budget's pretty tight, but the one thing I'm trying to do right is create an electrically quiet environment, as electric guitar overdubs will be one of the main reasons for building this room. Does anyone make an affordable studio-grade light dimmer (variac?) that can be installed in a wall plate? I'm in Nashville FWIW...

 Thanks in advance!

You can find used Staco 501s on ebay from time to time from about $20 to $75.

I think it's easier to just use a fixture, like track lighting, that has 3 (or so) lights mounted on one rail. That way you add and subtract lights to match the mood you're going for, and you can aim the fixtures in any direction you want.

Yes track lights are fine, BUT the person asked about dimming! Still doesn't solve the issue.

Yes thank you guest, I was offering a different solution to using a dimmer. I realize I wasn't offering a dimmer solution.

Rock,

That particular model would be used more for equipment that you would plug into it.

Sonic, I don't think Carl was yelling - only emphasizing a particular word. I use caps for words I would emphasize (so meaning isn't lost) on the boards all the time, seems to make things clearer for the most part.

Examples -

THIS IS YELLING, AND CAN GET OBNOXIOUS FAIRLY QUICKLY.

This is NOT yelling, but merely emphasizing the specific WORD you would speak a bit louder if talking instead of typing.

May not be normal "internet protocol", but people here are apparently used to it.

BTW, I also prefer multiple circuits with separate switches INSTEAD of dimmers, considering the major hassle/cost of dimmers vs. switches  Steve

Bummer... With all the BBCode formatting options available to us here, many still rely on the 1980s-style "Caps Lock" key...

Yeah, maybe if us "old farts" stopped helping all you "young punks" learn stuff our "modern" schools can't be bothered to teach anymore, we'd have time to learn all this "new-fangled" stuff...
