I had placed a fabric wrapped, 4ftx2ft x 4" thick, rigid insulation panel on either side of my mix position to kill flutter echo. Although they did a great job, they were sort of overkill, and I decided to use them in the rear corners of my room for bass trapping (excellent results!)
For the flutter echo at the mix position, I could probably get away with something much less substantial than 4" thick panels; two inch would be more than enough, one inch would probably work, especially if held one or two inches off of the wall surface. Unfortanately, I have gone through hell and back trying to get 703/705 panels in LA without luck. I ended up purchasing Auralex 4" mineral fiber panels for the big panels mentioned above, but the Auralex stuff is around $30 for EACH 2ftx4ft piece!
So, if 703/705 is a hopeless cause in my area, and the Auralex stuff is too expensive for a second order, what other material can I use for 1" or 2" panels? (I'm not looking for 703 equals from other companies, that has been just about as hopeless as the OC products.) I'm looking for some other material that could be used for relatively thin panels on either side of my mix position. I don't need a product with outstanding acoustical properties; this is just to break up the annoying reflections from two closely spaced parallel walls. Any suggestions for a material/product that would work in this situation? Looks aren't too important as I will be covering the panels with the same burlap that was used on the big 4" panels.
Thanks.
alternative to thin rigid fiberglass panels?

Yeah, that would work, nicely. But after a good 6 month search for 1 or 1.5" rigid insulation, I FINALLY found some locally and installed four panels over the weekend. Prior to the final installation, I did a little "with" vs "without" testing and the difference was remarkable. Considering that my final cost for each 2ft x 4ft panel was only $25 (including fiberglass, burlap, paying someone else to do the sewing, and installation hardware), NO ONE should be working in an untreated room.
