Light Dimmers?

Hi all,
Does anyone know if you can get dimmers that don't cause hum? I have a small (new) voc booth which has been cabled for a standard 240V light fixture on the ceiling, and would love to be able to use a dimmer. I asked the sparky but he didn't know of anything (or couldn't be bothered)!
I was also wondering if it's better to use low voltage, as they have a transformer?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

BTW "Sparky" is what we simplefolk call an electrician in Australia, in case anyone was wondering.
