shutters???

Post by nukmusic »

any thoughts on this:

just an idea that popped into my head. 24" X 80" door(pair) were $25ea in Home Depot. Line a wall of the vocal/live rm with something like this. either flat or in the form of triangles. Using standard indoor wooden shutters with one side FLIPPED UPSIDE down so that the half points up and the other half points down..........Line 702 or similar insulation behind them. Maybe even use shutters with different size slants? Maybe even use the adjustable shutters that you can open or close so you may select the level of absorption? If the fixed slants are used.......maybe seal some of the slant openings with acoustic calk. seal some all the way, some half way, some in the middle, some on the ends, leave some open?

What could you call it. Slot Resonator/Diffuser combo??? :D Would it
work?

Anything you put in a sound field will do SOMETHING to the sound; the trick is normally to have it do something you WANT, which means having a calculated plan, building to the plan, then (most likely) after testing, you MODIFY some parameter so it actually WORKS the way you'd hoped...

What you propose has been mentioned in a few places, I've even tried to calculate what would happen once or twice; but generally, the only way to KNOW what it will do is to thoroughly test a room with something like ETF, save and label all the data, then build the "WTFITSC", and REtest.

What it comes down to is how bad you want to know if it'll work :? Steve

I've thought about this as well a few times. Seems when I walk through Home Depot and see the bifold doors and shutters. Only thing is, like Steve said it's untested and will do something to the sound. As opposed to nothing, I'm sure it would help. Randomly sealing off some of the slots seems a guess at best.
I've often thought some Plantation shutters with absorbent material behind would make a cool variable hard/soft surface. But I also think a Matched pair of M149s would be cool too. it's only money!
jump, and the net will appear...
