Owens Corning 703 or 705?

Post by grahluk »

Loaded question I know. The best answer I'm sure is "depends on the application". Basically I need to buy some rigid fiberglass to make some broad band panels to treat a room. It's a 18'x12'x9' room with hardwood floors. It's not critical that it be acoustically perfect. Serious bass treatment not necessary. Just an edit and composing room so cutting down on mid/high reflections. I have 12 2'x2' RPG branded absorbers. They are made from 705 I suspect. Even wrapped in fabric with no frame they hold their shape very well. I even dropped one from a distance. It fell on the corner and didn't deform. I've handled absorbers also just fabric wrapped that could deform with little abuse. I guess this was 703. I was told by a "name" room designer that does the rooms at a studio I work at. He said stay away from 705 for general broad band reduction saying that the room will be on the tubby sounding side with the higher density rigid fiberglass. I will use the 705 panels for corner bass traps. Should I do the general wall panels in 703? If so any luck making panels without frames. This is for my home setup in a rented place so serious construction is out. How about affixing the fabric wrapped 2" insulation to some sort of light board backing?

&03 is good. 705 reflects HF off axis abit. If you are not critical, use whichever is cheaoper, available, or an equivalent mineral wool product.

LOts of things onthe net finishing absorbers. Finish is not critical, make it look good and managable.

Thanks for the tip. I've decided to use the 705 panels for corner bass traps and do the wall panels in 703.
