rockwall diffusion

Post by Drake »

Hey everybody. So, I'll get straight to it. I'm in the process of designing my studio, and I'm planning on including a drum booth. I'm not sure what the dimensions of the booth are going to be, but I was thinking of having a rock wall on the rear wall. My questions are: How well will this type of diffusion work? Should I put rocks on all three walls(the front wall is going to a slideing-glass door)? Also, I would like this room to work as a vocal booth. So how would this design sound as a vocal booth? The reason I'm going this way is because I live in the desert of california, we're surround by rocks. So, basicaly I can get all the rocks I need for free. Well, thanks for all your help. Sorry I don't have exact dimensions or drawings.

Greetings and welcome to the site.

A lot of it will depend on the size of the room. If it's too small, it may be too live. If the room is larger, I don't see any problems. But you may want some absorbers that you can roll into the room if needed.

Thanks AaronW for welcoming me to the forums. I should have mentioned this in my first post: I can build the booth to about any size really. I just found out today that I'll have alot more room for construction than I thought. That's why I haven't come up with the dimensions yet. But I was thinking of 16'x12' maybe?

I knew I forgot something! Ceiling height will most likely be 16 feet.

Glad to see someone w/ high ceilings for a change. What do yo plan for the other 2 walls? Any absorption at all in the room?

I'll probably install some MiniTraps to tighten up the bass and maybe some HF MicroTraps for the side walls. Or just more MiniTraps.

You should be ok. I'm planning on something similar in one of my tracking rooms on one wall. I'd like to use some river rock, but limestone is more readily available here in Nashville.

Drake,

Keep in mind that the wall will only act as an effective diffuser down to frequencies whose wavelengths are about 1/2 the average feature depth (D) of the stones.

Lower Frequency Limit ≈ 6900/D

Where D is in inches.

I would guess that the average depth D is around half the depth of the deepest 'caverns' in your rock formation. ;)
