Back to the panel-trap design thing... if you're trying to get one panel trap to fix a specific problem, you might have a tough time getting it to nail the trouble-freqs , like Knightfly mentioned. In my studio, I built a bunch of them with minor variations on them (some built with 2x4 frames, some with 2x6, and varying between 1/4" and 5/16" membranes) and scattered them around the room. Individually, they're tough to predict, but as a group they should cover a pretty wide range, and a lower range than my broad-band absorbers.
The more different kinds of absorption you combine, the better, in my opinion. Kinda like picking a good multi-vitamin. =)

By the way here is one studio that I mostly constructed(design is only small part of mine). I made the structure, accoustic pannels, bookshelves, doors, windows and etc...
