RPG's Studio In A Box...comments, please:)

Post by petelms »

Hello!

I'm a newbie here. And with acoustics also...

So, my first question is about RPG's Studio In A Box. Would that be worth buying?

My room dimensions:
length: 4,10m
width: 3,85m
height: 2,45m

Here is my little plan. I made simple webpages to make it more easier to get the info  I hope you understand my english. :P

The main question that I have at the moment: If I decide to buy that Studio In A Box, then do I need any other acoustic treatment to my walls?

THANKS! And remember to visit my link:)

petelms,

Based on the information you gave:

Studio-in-a-Box from RPG will give you 22% coverage of the room.
Auralex Project 2 Roominators will also give you 22% coverage.
• Both kits have the same amount of corner devices.
• The Studio-in-a-Box looks like it will cost you around $530.00.
• The Project 2 Roominator will cost you about $499.00 (MSRP).
• Note that neither solution is "ideal" for your room. Covering 22% would be about a minimum for your size and function (project studio) of room.

You mentioned on your site that you might consider acoustical ceiling tiles. If you do this, either of the above packages will provide you with "the rest" of what you'll probably need. The only exception will be when using the 1032As and/or the sub. With the either of these, you will need additional low frequency control. The above packages only provide treatments down to about 80-100 Hz. To get the control you need below that, you will want to consider some other options. You can either add on a few strategically placed LF absorbers to the packages above or you can change your choice completely. Since I would assume you want to keep things around the $500.00 range, I would suggest considering building some of your own devices, based on the suggestion here in this group, or in the myriad references, such as Everest's books.

If you have a little more green to work with, you can consider some commercial devices. My company makes various products that can control down to the 40-50 Hz range:

Venus Bass Traps
MegaLENRDs
MegaMAX-Wall (Not on our website, but available through our dealers. They are 2'x4'x8.5" stand-mounted panels, like our MAX-Wall panels only thicker.)
TruTraps

If you go with one of the packages, you can supplement it with a box of Venus or MegaMAX-Wall. You will benefit most from using these devices on the back wall for the former, or between you and the back wall for the latter.

If you decide on a completely different approach, you can use one of our TruTraps Systems for the whole room. But they will cost you more than one of the more basic packages outlined above. (About $1,200.00 MSRP.)

Finally, the depth of your room really prevents you from gaining any benefits from diffusors. However, our TruTraps System would give you an easy option for adding diffusors should you feel the room is "too dead." You can add our Q'Fusors right to the face of the TruPanels. Now, since the TruTraps System offers pretty much the same raw coverage as the above packages, you shouldn't run into that sort of problem. But you have the diffusion option in case you do. (This is somewhat subjective.)

A few final notes:
This link will take you to the page of our Acoustics101.com site that provides suggestions for ceiling tiles. (Scroll down the page a bit.)
• Filling above the ceiling grid with inexpensive "pink" insulation will help with low frequency control in the room. Fill the airspace above the grid at least 50%. More is better up to 100%, but there's little benefit to over-stuffing it.
• There are many other options for your room than what I've given here. Others will probably have plenty to offer! :D
