Green Glue Extensive Testing

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Green Glue Extensive Testing

Post by KPAudio »

Has anyone taken a look at the updated Green Glue website? Looks like they've added a tone of Test Data and i've got a question.

Based of the numbers it looks like using 2 sheets of 1/2 inch drywall with green glue is better than 2 sheets of 5/8 with green glue.

The difference is mostly in the Mids-HF. The 1/2 assembly has 8dB of TL at 2kHz more than the 5/8. Where as the 5/8 has only 2db of TL more at 160Hz.

I was originally going to build my walls from 5/8s but I'm reconsidering now that I've gone through this data.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Which two are you comparing? There about two dozen different wall tests show there, with many different combinations of materials and dimensions. It's nt clear which two you are comparing.

In any even, I would not be too concerned about how the wall performs at 2 kHz. 8 dB extra up so high is nice, but what's more important is the low end. IF the low end is good, then you are pretty much guaranteed that the mids and highs will be doing fine as well.

But anyway, please identify which two walls you are looking at, so we are all on the same page.

My apologies for not being clear. I was specifically talking about these two reports.

5/8

1/2

They are the same wall structures: drywall | green glue | drywall | 2x4 with insulation | drywall. The only different being the thickness of the sheets.

I believe I will be going with 5/8 personally because I agree with your statement about the TL in LF carries through to the Mid and Highs. However, I was really more interested in how these two builds both responded across the frequency range. 1/2 has a better 100Hz TL but 5/8 has a better 80 Hz TL.

Cheers,
