What is important for creating correct room

Post by jaydeeslovene »

Hello everybody :)

I am planning to create new studio in one part of our house. For electronic music using Reason program. I calculate dimensions, read things about creating studios, checked some designs and spend some time in this things..... But i stoped at next questions....

Raw room dimensions are:
5m long
3,7m wide
2,6m high (it can be changed to higher)

What shape of studio would be best for creating electronic music?

I hear and read about minimal volume of studio that it should be 80m3 minimum.... what is your opinion about that? What you think that the propper volume should be?

If i place room in the room what calculations should i use? Dimensions of raw room or dimensions of room that i am creating inside the room?

When i place dimensions in ratio calculator i get the 1 : 1,42 : 1,92 .... What is your opinion about ratio? Which one is the best one?
But still don't know if its correct to use dimensions of raw room or inside room?

Thanks for your time and hope you can answer anything about it

Hiya mate,

Have you read the instructions of how to detail your first post? You’ll get more response if you follow the rules for posting... I don’t see your location?

Good to have diagrams though : ) although on second glance it doesn’t appear to be to scale for your dimensions...

I don’t know where you’ve been inspired to set your room structure out... as mentioned in a nother recent thread if your back walls are angled like yours it will focus reflections from the back wall towards your head!

For isolation as you have suggested you want by mentioning room in a room, you design that element first; find out how much isolation you need and design it accordingly using help from the forum. Most of the time and in your situation I imagine you will need a 2 leaf system with gap inbetween. Please give us the details of your existing house construction so we can help.

Once your isolation is sorted the face of the inner leaf is where you can work out your room modes, but then if you are designing an RFZ room then you begin designing according to the space you have.

As far as I know there isn’t any difference particularly with electronic music with a smallish room. It’s a decent size for a listening room I think...but others can comment further....when all the info is presented.

Your inner leaf should be rectangular if possible. Your room may not look rectangular after you add acoustic treatment (that's the angled shape that you have in your pictures). This treatment will vary depending on the type of control room you want to build. The favored type of control room around this forum is the RFZ design.
I hear and read about minimal volume of studio that it should be 80m3 minimum.... what is your opinion about that? What you think that the propper volume should be?
Read the final chapters of ITU-R BS.1116-3 as it clearly states room characteristic required for a proper listening room.
If i place room in the room what calculations should i use? Dimensions of raw room or dimensions of room that i am creating inside the room?
Use Bob Gold's Room Mode Calculator to check if your room dimensions pass all 3 tests!

There is no BEST ratio. There have been many theorized ratios. Basically, make your room as big as you can possibly afford and make sure that the ratios pass all 3 tests on Bob Gold's calculator. That's all.

To answer your one question in the picture about red or green walls, your inner leaf is the red rectangular walls. Those are the dimensions that matter. The green stuff is just acoustic treatment.

It appears that you've made the mistake most people do. You started building without consulting this forum.
