Subfloor beef up and 4d finish nails

Post by JLDrumStudio »

I’m adding my second layer of 5/8 drywall with green glue to subfloor. Using Greg’s design for my cleats and as I’m browsing all the post about subfloor beef up, I notice no one is mentioning using Rod Gervais idea of holding the drywall up with 4d finish nails into the sides of the joist. It’s been working out great for me. I use temporary supports on the first layer. Put the backer rod in, then use the 4d nails every 8 to 12 inches. Take my temporary supports down and then it’s ready for caulk. Doing the same on second layer so the cleats will go on after the caulk dries. Not using cleats or moving them around until the caulk is dry. I think Rods idea Is great, the 4d finish nail hold the drywall up to the subfloor nice and tight and caulking gets behind the nails. I tap the nails flush to the drywall so the next sheet sits flat.

Just an idea that has been working out good for me.

Thanks for sharing!

I find that after the caulk dries on your first layer of beef up, you can pull the cleats off and put up your second layer. Remember to apply caulk to the part of the cleat that touches your drywall for your final layer. This will prevent any vibration rattle type sounds from ever happening. I can't tell you how many cleats I put up then realized I forgot to add the caulk to the cleat. This happened over and over for me. :horse:
