Fabric for inside out walls - UK

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Fabric for inside out walls - UK

Post by NickMac10 »

Hi all,

Can anybody recommend fabric that can be purchased in the UK to use for inside out walls?

The companies that have appeared from my (limited) Googling so far are all offering a complete design and construction solution, whereas I am hoping to build these myself.

(Apologies if this has been raised/answered elsewhere, I've searched but couldn't find anything)

Thanks in advance,
Nick.

The best fabric for studios is made by a company called "Guilford of Maine". It's an American company, but they might have a dealer or rep in the UK. Not sure. You could e-mail them.

Pretty much any good-quality fabric that is breathable will work fine. Try stores that sell fabric for upholstery, such as re-covering old sofas and suchlike. The only acoustic property that you need, is that it is "breathable": hold a piece over your mouth and nose, and if you can breath through it without too much resistance, then it should be fine. But if you really have to breath hard to force your breath through it, that's not so good.

Thank you for the advice. Guilford of Maine does seem to be a little tricky to get hold of over here, but these have been suggested as an alternative:

I'll order some samples and give them the breath test!

Gik Acoustics is one of the few good guys out there in the mad world of acoustic manufacturers and suppliers, so very probably the fabric that they sell will do just fine for what you need.
