New Loft studio - What flooring?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

New Loft studio - What flooring?

Post by Chrisyking »

Hi.

I'm converting my loft so I can move my studio up there. What floor should I use? I'm thinking of putting it on strips of rubber laid over the joists, but what chipboard should I use. 24T on top of 18mm to create a sandwich? Anyone tried anything?

Cheers

Apologies. So the loft is above a 60square metre flat (one of a block of four). In Watford Hertfordshire UK. I have permission for a dormer. At the moment its just got joists with ceiling boards nailed to the underside (see photo). The height is very low (2.4m at the highest point), and after the ridge beam has gone in it will be very critical height wise. I want to mix stuff and play acoustic guitar in the room. Not massively loud, but how long is a piece of string? Maybe 70-80dB. Maybe as loud as a piano?

There will be new thicker joists going in which will reduce the height even more. They will be bolted to the existing joists as one of the steels will be sunk into the room below. These thicker joists will sit in the steels.

So I need something to sit on the new joists flooring wise. I'll be putting rockwool between the joists obviously, but the question is what floor system to use.

I read this forum post: http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic ... on#p137212

...which is a really similar situation, but I couldn't gather from it what floor system you recommend.

I did notice the thing about resting the steels on an isolation pad. Do you know anyone in the UK who sells these?

Hope that's O.K.

Here's a PDF of the cross section of the new dormer.
